Getting ready to go to italy

Preparing for a 2-week trip to Italy has so far taken about 6 weeks of work.  We're off on the 26th, scheduled to be back on June 10, late at night.

I'm Frantically learning how to say things in Italian. Gloria seems to think that she will be able to speak Spanish to people and they'll understand it is if it were Italian.  Im not so sanguine about that.

The scariest part about preparation is that I have to pick out hotels without having the slightest idea how truthful the descriptions are.  Since it's tourist season, I thought I could not wait to the last minute to make reservations.  Through our travel history we've been known to be pleasantly surprised and horribly disappointed.

Yesterday, on Gloria's urging I called Delta to complain about the long layover at JFK on our return trip.  I managed to be connected to a senior representative who graciously changed our reservation for a slightly earlier flight.  It feels so good to have your wishes fulfilled.

Flying business class, we arrived at the airport early enough to take advantage of the Delta VIP lounge. Yoyi suggested that  because we're having so much fun in the lounge here, why don't  we just take out our tour books, read them here in the lounge, and camp out here for two weeks, and avoid the crowds, not to mention the discomfort of international flights.

This is the first long trip I've taken in recent memory on which I  have not carried a computer, and I'm enjoying the lighter weight backpack. Instead I bought an inexpensive tablet, on which I'm writing this blog. I didn't think I'd have much fun using the on-screen keyboard, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the tablet uses voice recognition. And gives pretty accurate results.

Voice recognition is also very sensitive. When I forgot to turn off the microphone a few minutes ago, it picked up my entire  conversation with a little two year old about visiting her grandma.

Well, it's time to start enjoying our14-hour flight ordeal.
